At a meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union held oh the 31st -■July, Rev. J. Hoastson (the greate.-Jt 'authority on football in New Zealand) occupied the chair. Mr -Harris said that the principal business before ths meeting was "the consideration of a report he had "to make' on four members ofthe Adding--'ton team, which played on last Saturday against Christchurch. These four — Heyburn (an interpro vincial man), Heyburn (junr.), Wilson and Simpson — disputed his decisions in the match, and he explained that he acted as referee only at the request of the Addingion team, fiisi - of all calling the team together and asking if there was any objection to him. Mr Harris stated the circumstances, and also complained of the action of Whiting, the Addington umpire. The members of the union were very indignant at the feeling displayed by the men, and carefully discussed the course which ought to be adopted. It was ultimately decided to suspend the four players for the remainder of the season. In respect to the umpire .- Whiting, it was resolved to write to the Addington Club, to the effect that his conduct was such as to meet with the strong disapproval of the union. The union also passed a. vote of thanks to the referee (Mr Harris) for the manner in which he had dealt with this unpleasant matter. — Weekly News. It is to be hoped the Manawatu Union will follow the Canterbury Union's example, as there is not the slightest doubt but the Palmerston team should be severely censured for their conduct towards Mr Hartgill, the referee on Saturday last. The Feildmg teanj.is to be congratulated on their success ; so far tliis season they played 9 matches, scoring 8 wins and a draw, they have' scored 52 points in all and haye had 13 points scored against them. . -
