The Manchester Rifles paraded on Friday night. There was a good muster, and Captain Pieasants gave the corps some smart exercise in the new movements. At the conclusion of the drill Captain Pieasants addressed the men on the suhjt>et offings. He expressed the utmost uawiliingness to punish offender for absence from drills, but he was compelled by the strictness of the regulations to doso. The men had really no excuse for putting themselves in the position tobe fined, because they could always apply for leave if their business or occupation prevented them attending, and he would always be most happy to grant it, although he much preferred seeing them on parade. They must understand that unless they were reported absent on leave, or from. sickness, he had no option but to inflict the fines. He requested the men to be particular in always appearing on parade with their uniforms and accoutrements clean and smart, and to note that on inspection: parades they should wear helmets and captain's parades their glengaries. The candidates for the two Imperial! commissions granted to New Zealand were examined in literature by W. G. Lee at the Old Government Buildings, Christchurch, on Tuesday last. They are Lieutenaut H.
