The Case of Louis Chemis
Tke first portion of the notes taken by his Honour the Chief Justice at the trial of Louis Chemis, Was under the consideration of Cabinet yesterday and the remainder were to be copied in time for review to-day. Yesterday, afternoon tho members of the Ministry were driven out to the scene of the murder, which they carefully inspected. The petitions in favour of the reprieve of Chemis will be presented on Saturday and the decision of the Executive Council is expected to be arrived at early next week, possibly on Monday. . Up to 2 o'clock to-day the petition in favour of Chemis had increased by 12 lists rebeived, showing 1182 names, or. an average, of 98 per list, whilst the list of Mr Fernandoz shows additional signatures to the number of 200, which, with the 43 lists already accounted for, gives a sum total Of 4550 names. We (New Zealand Tunes) under tand that the prisoner Chemis has transmitted i?o the Minister of Justice a long statement - respecting his case, and has expressed strong dissatisfaction with certain things that have been done ostensibly on/ his behalf.. The Sydney/ Bulletin, alluding to the Chemis murder case and the evidence, the paper says, :— There's nothing new under the sun. The case cf Brannigan and Murphy; recently discharged from custody in England as innocent men, turned upon such evidence at the time they were condemned to death many years ago. One of the prisoners was found in possession of part of a newspaper of which the alleged other part appeared to have been left by them at the scene of the crime.
