The Minister of Lands states that he has received letters from the West Coast, North Island, pointing out that bush felling is almost at a standstill in consequence of all the men being engaged at ilaxmills. It is almost impossible to get men for bushfelling.
Auckland, July 17
It has transpired that a son of the Honorable A J. Balfour, the well known Chief Secretary for Ireland, arrived m Auckland about a fortnight ago and after a short stay returned Home by the Mariposa via San Francisco as quietly as he came. Mr Balfour's visit is said to have had no political significance.
Nelson, July 17
George White, late Suporinteudent of the Nelson Lunatic Asylum, has been committed for trial on three charges of i.'nihezzling money received by him for the maintenance of parents.
The Waimea Count* J^oun.il at a meet ing to-day passed a resolution condemning the proposal Hospital and Charitable Aid Bill, and calling on the local members to oppose the measure.
