It has been discovered that the Van Yean water supply 10 impregnated with germs of typhoid fever. London, July 17. The Bill giving responsible government to Western Australia has been passed in the House of Lords. The Times states that Mr Healy addressed a meeting of the National League in Dublin, at which he defied and insulted the Commissioner. The blockade of Crete is denied. The mutilated body of a prostitute was found under a lamp-post in Castle Alley, Whitechapel, at 1 o'clock this morning. No arrests have been made. The New Zealand Trust and Loan Company here declared a dividend of 10 per cent. All the counsel reserved for the defence in the Times Parnell Commission have withdrawn from the case. This action caused some remarks to be made from the Bench, and Sir James Hannen, the President, said: We can do without their assistance, and Mr Parnell has not the right to dictate conditions to the Court." Sir H. James, one of plaintiff's counsel, is continuing the cross-examination of O'Kelly.

As Don Pedro 2nd, the Emperor of Brazil, was leaving a theatre this evening, he was fired at with a revolver by a Portuguese. The bullet went wide of the mark, and the Emperor drove off uninjured.

A Western Australian loan of at four per cent, is announced to be placed on the market on Tuesday next.
The English wheat market is firmer, the Continental steady. New Zealand mutton is neglected at s£d.

A dense fog was experienced in the city yesterday, and all railway and street traffic was suspended.
A nugget containing 4610zs of pure gold has been discovered by a poor man working in a mine in Taranguila township, situated about 133 miles north west of Melbourne.
The body of a woman named Annie Thorton has been discovered in a cottage in the city, and there is little doubt a foul murder has been committed. The murder seems to have taken place quite a week ago. The police as yet have no clue to the perpetrators. Thursday Island, This Day. A beat containing the mate and five of crew of the German barque Kenilworth, wrecked at Fly River, New Guinea, and which was reported as missing, has arrived safely.
