In the course of an interview with the Shah of Per.ia, to-day the Marquis of Salisbury said that England had watched with sympathy the policy of Persia for developing commerce, and the steps taken to free her subjects from any oppression. He hoped that she would continue to see that she was preparing alliances which would enable her to pursue a peaceful attitude and reciprocate the good friendship of England. The Shah nodded assent. At the Stoekbridge Meeting to day the Cup was won by Lord Hastings St. Patrick, Napoleon 2, Noble Chieften 3. Mr W. H. Smith has announced his intention of moving for a committee to report on the principle that should govern settlements on members of the Eoyal Family. Sttakim, July 3. The fight between, the dervishes and the Egyptians at Wady Haifa extended over seven miles of country, and throughout was characterised for stubborn fighting on both Bides. The British troops, under Colonel Wodehouse captured 500 of the enemy. Chicago, July 3. At a mass meeting resolutions denouncing the members of the Clan-na-Gael Society were carried. It also decided that the Society was usurping the attributes of a Government in decreeing death, and in exacting a fealty, and was levying war against a nation friendly to America. The meeting demanded that Government should suppress it. Madbid, July 4. Don Sagasta, the Prime Minister of Spain, has consented to the proposal that his Holiness the Pope may reside at Valencia. Paris, July 4. A terrible catastrophe occurred in the mining district of St. Etienne, by an explosion of firedamp in a colhery. Two hundred miners were killed. Disgraceful scenes have taken place in the Chamber of Deputies owing to the allegation that M. Bonvick is implicated with a relative in blackmailing. Government have been obliged to promise that a State judicial enquiry shall be instituted. By an explosion in a fireworks factory in Paris 18 persons have been killed.
