The police authorities are of opinion that special steps require to be taken to suppress the inflow of French recidiyistes from New Caledonia to Australia. They state that the French authorities succeed in preventing escape by French vessels, but there are large numbers who manage to get away from the island by means of English and colonial trading vessels. Juno 28. Floods have occurred in the Kaipara district, and booms at mills have bean carried away. A serious landslip occurred at Waitakeru Tunnel, on the Henderson Railway, completely blocking the way, and preventing the passage of the trains. Further damaga is feared. A claim for £250 damages is to be entered against the- City Council by the relations of Mr Hi Stevenson, who died from the effects of a fall over the embankment in Hobson-Street. Dunkdin, This Day. A petition with 3,600 signatures has been forwarded to the House against granting a license to the Exhibition. JS'afieb, June 28 The Resident Magistrate's Court has been occupied two days in taking evidence in the Mahia murder case, and will have to sib again to- morrow. The evidence is purely circumstantial, but much stronger than that given at the inquest, several missing links haying since been found. .
