Our report of the concert at Halcoinbe is unavoidably hsld over. Sugar has gone up again, and is still rising. Housekeepers should take the hint. A man named Captain Swede dropped down dead in Ingestre street, Wellington, at 11 o'clook last night. The Maori man who was shot at while ploughing over Ercoghton's land, at Napier, died in the Hospital on Sunday. Owing to prascure on our space we are compelled to hold over some interesting reading matter and our usual weekly weather report. On and after Thursday next an extra mail for Palmerston will close at Feilding on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 10.30 a.m. Our readers are reminded of the appearance of Devere and Mocra's famous minstrels in the Assembly Booms to-mor-row night. As the programme is an attractive one, f\nd the prices of admission low, a crowded hpuse may bs expected. Jjaird ts exhibiting a 76 pounder of the Green Mammoth yariety. Colonial Brett, M.L.C, died at Christchurch on Sunday. Though ailing for some tide, his death was unexpected, as ha was able to take daily exercise. The Borough Council balance-sheet appears on our fourth page. In consequence of the fatal railway accident in Armagh four officials, including the driver, s reman, and guard, of the excursion train, have been arrested for neglect. The channel across the Wanganui bar is now almost strait out, and in this respect there is a great improvement in the state of affairs as compared with that of a few weeks back. There was a depth of 10ft 6in on the bar on Saturday morning. — Herald. A men named Frederick Night was arrasted at Foxton on Saturday by Constable Tapp on suspicion of being concerned in the robory at the Feildmg postoffice. Ho was brought before the Police Court at Palmerston North yesterdey and remanded till Friday. To-day Mr W, E. Godfrey adTertises that his pure bred Jersey hull "Taurus the Second" may be seen at the farm of Mr G. Kevinßton Jones, at Teonui, from whom all particulars as to psdegree and fees of service may be obtained. In a future issue further details will be given. We are glad to see that Miss Roach is to take a atep higher in the etaff of teachers of the Feilding State School. She has been nearly ten years Junior Assistant in the same school, during which time she has given general satisfaction, and she well deserves the promotion. To-day Mr Motmtfort showed us a tin of fresh butter (made by Mr Dermer of Cloverdene) , put down two months ago, under the cool vacuum prccoss. When opened the butter was fresh and sweet, exactly in the same condition as when taken from the dairy. Messrs Ratcliff Bros, have bought out Mr Penberthy, of Makino, and commenced business as general storekeepers, drapers and ironmongers. We gladly welcome the new firm, and hope they have many years of suooessful business before them. They are in a rising neighborhood, surrounded by hard working and prosperous settlers, therefore everything is in their favor. ' A special meeting of the School Committee was held last night, all the members' being present. ■ Correspondence was , reacj from the Education Board re applications to fill vacancies in the staff of teachers.
