Another Mysterious Death
A northern paper last week remarked '■ that readers could hardly say at presenl 1 that " there's nothing in the papers," if * ouly because of the number of murders, tioods, and other causes of loss of life which have been chronicled. Another death has to be reported now, in which [ suspicious circumstances are prominent, , though no evidence can be aduceu to sheet ; home the charge. At Oamaru on Tues- . day morning a Mrs Heywood died sud* ; doniy, it was reported from a blow from , her husband. At the inquest a sister ol i the deceased said that Heywood had noi . been living on amicable terms with hie ; wife. It was shown that Heywood had ! followed his wife (who was enceinte) i into her bedroom, and to escape him she had jumped out of a window ; that he had afterwards struck a sister ol j deceased's, and that the latter was shortly i afterwards seen lying on the floor, but the , sister could not say whether Heywood [ struck or pushed her down, or whether she fell. After this the two women left the house. Mrs Heywood had been taken t ill on the road. She, however, reached ; her brother's house, and becoming uncon- . scions, died shortly after. The evidence • of two doctors went to show that all the I organs were healthy, and that death must have been the result of violence, but there > were no marks on the body of deceased. ' Death was due to compression of the 1 brain, due to the rupture of a blood vessel. 1 From the police evidence it appeared that 1 Heywood admitted having pushed de--1 ceased, and that she fell on a mat. The 1 jury brought in a verdict to the effect that 1 the deceased had met her death by vio--1 lence, but how or in what way there was 1 no evidence to show. Heywood was then 1 discharged from custody. viftwurna tinni nuaafflsa—
