A Sensible Governor
—
We have received the first number of the Evening Standard, published in Melbourne. There was a grand ceremony at the public openiug of the offices of the paper, at which His Excellency the Acting Governor assisted. There was a large company present, which included the elite and intelligence of the capital of Victoria. Iv the course of his address His Excellency said : " Wheuever I go to a new place the first thing I do is to look down the advertising columns of its newspapers, and I find a very quick and accurate insight iuto the wants and condition of the people is to be gathered from their advertisements, which are in fact a mirror of the times." While we congratulate the proprietors on the brilliant opening they have made, and wishing them all prosperity their enterprise deserves, we also congratulate them, and the people of Victoria generally, on the possession in their midst of a gentleman of such high station as that of their Acting Governor, who can give expression to such plain common sense.
