The Fielding Star. TUESDAY, MAT 14, 1889. An Explanation

Some comment has been made, to our disadvantage by interested people, on a report which appeared in our Marton contemporary, the Advocate, of the proceedings of an alleged annual meeting of ratepayers of the Manchester Road District, which was not reported in the Star. The reason is simple : as there was no quorum there was no meeting (six ratepayers being necessary to form a quorum) the only ratepayers present being 1 Messrs D. H. Macarthur, H. Pryce-Jones, and G. Wheeler. The Star ivas the only journal represented. There was a general conversation among the three gentlemen named, and at its conclusion our representative enquired if the subject matter was public or private, and he was informed " As there is no meeting it is simply a private conversation." It is only a matter of conjecture who forwarded the alleged report to our contemporary, who, we feel assured, accepted it in perfect good faith. In this connection it may be noted that except the officials and the reporter of the Star the only persons present were Messrs Wheeler, Pryce-Jones, and Macarthur. The officials deny most positively sending the report. Mr Maoarthur stated to the reporter of the Star that there being no meeting what had passed was, he consid ered, a private conversation, which could not honorably be published, and the reporter of the Star, as he did not for this reason send what hal passed to the Star, cerrainly did nut send it to the Advocate. Who then did send thw report ?
