Haire Te Pere was executed for the murder of the Pooke family. He met his fate without emotion. At hia trial at Gisborne, Pere confessed to the murder, but last Friday night he made a statement to Oapt. Preece, R.M. to the effect that he and his brother entered Pook's store for robbery, but being detected, his brother struck Pook aud in fact committed all the murders while he (Haire) looked on with bewildered astonishment. He stated to others that it was arranged amongst his family that he being guiltless, should be arrested and would be got off, his brother paying for the lawyer with proceeds of the robbery.
There was no communication with the steaoiet-e owing to the storm. The hangman who carried out the sentence was a prisoner serving a short sentence for which service the rest of his sentence had been remitted.
