CARBINE'S MARVELLOUS PER FORMANCES.

[PER B.S. MANAPOURI ]

Melboubnb, May 1

Speaking of Carbine in the Gold Cup, the Argus says : — The enthusiasm at Mr Wallace's victory was immense, and both horse and rider were cheered vociferously, the Hon. James White being tone of the first to congratulate the owner of the popular magpie jacket upon his success. Under the circumstances Carbine's performance is simply marvellous, for three furlongs from home he was intt-rferred with to such an extent that he dropped back absolutely last, and it really seemed 100 to I against him. But O'Brien set him going again, and the colt answering gamely to every call cut the leaders down one by one, ani won by a head from Melos, who ran a remarkably good colt. Some sensation was caused when it became known that Mr Gannon, owner of Melos, had lodged an objection to the winner on the ground of jostling, but as the jockey Ellis had weighed in before the protest was entered, the stewards refused to entertain it. The announcement was received with cheers. After the race the spectators stood about in knots discussing the wonderful performance of the winner. The time (3min 31 sec) is the fastest recorded for the Sydney Cup. Kegarding the A.J.U. Plate, the Argus says : — The champion, as on the previous days, had to be driven to the post on account of his laziness. Lochiel held command for the greater part of the journey, and on his retirement Melos, Abercorn, and Carbine, joined issue. Melos waa going so well at the distance that his success was loudly proclaimed ; but the moment O'Brien called on the favourite he gradually responded, and after the semblance of a race won easily from Abercorn, who just heat Melos for Sbcoud place. Mr Wallace's colt was quite t'le hero of the meeting, and he cLqjib which on returning to scale were well deserved.

A notice from Mr E. Goodbehere, clerk of the Kiwitea Licensing District intimates that the next annual meeting will be held at the school house, Cheltenham, on the sth June.
