Smuggling in New Zealand
(PBK UNITED PRESS ABBOOTA.TIOW.) Wellington; May 8. A gentleman in Wellington who was for many years connected with the Police Department, informs the Post that smuggling is carried on to such an extent that the colony is losing in revenue at the rate of £250,000 per annum, and expresses the opinion that increased vigilance "on the part of the Customs authorities would prevent a great deal of this., illicit trade. ■> The informant mentions a case where a certain tradesman in Auckland -was recently offered the opportunity of purchasing a ton of tobacco at % l/» per lb landed from a * whaling vessel on ' part of the coast wMch is ndt fre- : gueritly visited by human beings, Cobbe & Darragh, are sole .agents throughout the Districts of Feilding and "'" Sandon for Messrs Henderson Bros.' eelegrated " Silver Geni'* RoHer Flour* '"
