The train which met with an accident, at Hamilton was carrying 150 excursionists to witness the Centennial celebrations at New York- . ■■_ ■ - .

It was thrown off the rails by somew--mishap to a switch, and smashed into a water tank.

A carriage containing thirty-five pas* smgers, most of whom were asleep, was h irled ti the top of the engine,, and caught fir 3 from the furnace ofthe latter.

Entangled m the wreckage, many of the unfortunate people were unable to escape, and no fewer than 20 were burned to dtsh.

The flames spread and destroyed the whole train. There was no water, and the heat wae so great that all attempts afc rescue was useless.
