Sydney, April 14 It has been ascertained that three cases of modified smallpox have been discovered on board the steamer 3uthrie. The mail tram, from Janer Hay, when travelling round a curve near Taree at a speed of 35 miles an hour, dashed into a mob of cattle. The engine went oyerthe embankment, aad also some of the trucks, but luckily the couplings between the trucks and the passengers carnages gave way, . thus saving the occupants of the latter from injury. Oaks, the driver of the engine, had a leg torn off, and the fireman, Ferguson, fell under the engine, both being killed. These were the only casualties, with the exception of two of the passengers, who sustained slight injury bp the collision. Owing to the strike the Phoauix Foundry at Ballarat has been closed, and 600 hands thrown out of employment. Hoba-bt, April 15. Three men are reported to have carried off a girl at Melton and outraged her. Two of them have been arrested.
