Carbine's Performances

The Melbourne Age says : — " Carbine's victory in the Loch Plate towers head and shoulders above anything that has ever been accomplished by a three-year-old in Australia, not excepting the mighty deeds of First King, Grand Flaneur, and Navigator. To carry a stone penalty and beat such an exceptional horse as Lochiel in a weight-for-age contest was a mighty performance, and showed that when Mr Donald Wallace gave 3000 guineas for the compact son of Musket he knew what he was about. Odds were naturally laid on Lochiel, who led until well within the straight run for home, and then it was that Carbine showed himself to be a veritable bulldog. From the distance to the finish the issue was stubbornly contested, and though everybody seemed to be satisfied that Carbine had "got home," Mr Oakley's verdict was only " a short half head." O'Brien rode a superb race, and finished as he alone can finish when it comes to squeezing home by a nostril, but it would be unfair to ascribe LochiePs defeat to Clifford's deficiency, as the New Zealand horseman has proved himself worthy to be bracketted with the best of Victorian riders."

Carbine won £2134 at the V.E.C, Autumn meeting.
