Haynes, member for Mudgee in the last Parliament, who stated that Huntly, an auctioneer, one of the promoters of the Company for leasing the tramways, had offered him £1000 to vote for the leasing failed to satisfy the Commission that Huntly really offered him a bribe. March 6. At the instance of Mr Garvan, Colonial Treasurer, the managers of the Bank of New Zealand and the Joint Stock Bank and two accountants have made pearchmg investigations into the pubhc accounts of the colony and have reported that there is a deficit of L4,064,000. Later. The Bank managers who investigated the state of the colony's finances have declined to sign a report, on the ground that they fail to see why the money voted but not expended should be called a deficit. In the Assembly last night, the amend ment to the address-m-repiy, moved by Sir Henry Parkes, was carried by 68 to 64. Later. Sir H. Parkes is engaged in forming a new Ministry. Hobart, March 6. The largest fire which has occurred for many years broke out last night in Sond's bark Mill, which was burnt to the ground. The damage is estimated at £10,000. By the Taupo a cargo of 136 head of cattle arrived, and were sold at an average of L9 12s per head. 20 were lost on the voyage. Price unsatisfactory.
