Faturday, March 2nd, 1889. {Continued from last issue.) Present— Messrs Bull (chairman Wheeler, Reeves, and LethLridge, CORRESPONDENCE. Letter from D. H. Macarthur apolc gising for his abseuce at this meetin of the Board, and recommending the . Reid's claim be settled by arbitration Froui a number of settlers in Nc 5 Ward applying to have their name placed on the rate roll for that ware (They were all on the roll.) With reference to Mr Reid's appJi cation the chairman said the first thin] to decide was, whether the Board wai liable for the alleged damage. H apologised for not having been abl to go down as arranged to the ground as he was suddenly called to Welling ton. • Mr Lethbridge thought the bes plan would be to accept Reid's offe re arbitration. Mr Reid was present at the meeting and Baid he considered the Board wa legally liable. Ho gave a genera description as to the causes and exten of the damage done by the wate being allowed to drain on to hii ground. The Chairman thought a legal opin iou should be obtained. Mr Lethbridge did not see mucli good in that because another lawyei could be got to give an exactly opposite opinion. Mr Reeve said that was the way the lawyers lived. Ater a desultory conversation, Mi Han kins, solicitor, being present, the chairman moved aud it was carried, That a' legal opinion be taken from him as to the position of the Board. Mr Hanking said as Mr Reid had already talked to him on the matter, he would prefer if they consulted some other lawyer. At any rate .he considered the Board should keep their drain clear. At the same time he reiterated hiß previous request that the Board should consult another solicitor* He would neither act for nor against the Board. Mr Reid having been consulted the , following .resolution was proposed by Mr Reeve* seconded by Mr Bull, That the Board accept-Mr Reid's offer as in his letter of 28th February, subject to the opinion of the Solicitor-General as to the legal liability of the Board, the Chairman, and Clerk, and Mr Geid to state the case and the Board to pay all expenses.— Carried. ! " Proposed by T. F. Jfceeye, seconded by F. Y. Lethbridge, That permission he granted to Mr Page, Ashurst, to erect a verandah in front of his shop, euhjectto the approval of the Engineer. — Carried. . . ', Proposed by T. F. Eeeve, seconded by F. Y. Lethbiidge, That the memorial Bont by the Wairarapa County Council, re legalisation of roads, be signed by the chairman on behalf of the Board. — Carried. Proposed by G, Wheeler, seconded by T. F. Reeve, That Messrs Bartholomews' offer for the sole right to cut flax on the Board's roads be accepted. — Carried. Proposed by C. Bull, seconded by T. F. Reeve, That a -slaughter house license be granted to T, L. Schmidt for current year,— Carrind, Proposed by T. F. Reeve, seconded . by. (X Bull, That the Board grant J. Boyle the sum of 10s per week for a month. — Carried. : Re the application of J. Slipper re leasing street at Miigby junction, the Board decided to have nothing to do with the matter. Re Mr Walker's application the Engineer was instructed to see to the drain. The usual accounts were passed for payment and the Board adjourned.
