Two seamen, named Melander and Me Kay, had a quarrel in the street during which the former was stabbed to the heart. The latter has been arrested. M. Clarke. ex-Minister of Justice, has been defeated. Free fights occurred at Newcastle over the local election and blood flowed freely. HoBARr, February 4. On Saturday the Federal Council disoursed the Pacific Cable question, but without arriving at any result. The general opinion was that Great Britain ought to share the cost of survey, con struction and maintenance. South Australia is willing to assist if guaranteed against loss on the overland line from Port Darwin.
