"Our Sentiments"

It is about time the newspaper press of the colony " considered its position" in respect to matters. At the present time a large amount of space is dovoted to sporting without corresponding advantage to proprietors, who have to pay a heavy aaiount f x tele graphic information of nominations acceptances and results of meetings, which interest only a small proportion of their readers. As a rule the clubs themselves do not recognise this, but on the contrary practice the most rigid economy in advertising, knowing that the newspapers are foolish enough to advertise nominations, Sec., free of charge. The machinery of the Press Association is costly to newspaper proprietors, and it is utilised to a very large extent for the benefit of the clubs. Under the ciroumstanoes it is certainly worth consideration by the Press Association whether an annual fee should not be demanded from all racing dubs desirous of having the nominations, &c., telegraphed and published. — Manawatu Times.

[A remedy, to a certain extent, lies in the hands of the proprietors of newspapers, because they are, as a rule, agents of the Press Association, and as such may therefore exercise their discretion as to forwarding handicaps, &c, and as owners of the papers, they may always refuse to publish them when received, If these powers were exercised the Jockey Clubs complained of would soon come to terms —or die out.— Ed.
