Fred Le Patourel, formerly private secretary to the Marquis of Normauby when the latter was Governor of New Zealaud, will shortly be married to Miss Bckly, of .Boston. It is expected that Parliament will meet on 21st February. The Daily Chronicle states that the Government are aware of Stanley's safety, but that it is considered impolitic -to^disclose his whereabouts. At" a' meeting of the British Borneo Trading Company, it was decided to open a timber trade with Australia. The Standard strongly protests against protracting the sittings of the Times Parnell Comaussion, by inquiring into the circumstances of the various cases of outrage and boycotting in Ireland, the evidence in which, from a similarity of the cases, is becoming hackneyed and wearying* m the extreme. The injuries sustained by the Eev C. Spurgeou are more serious than first supposed and it is reported that his condition is worse. San Francisco, January 15, Peter Jackson the Australian pugilist has made a match with McAufiffe, of San Franoisco, for 2000dols. The Australian champion has decided to visit England, with the object of meeting Jem Smith. Washington, January 15. The Senate has passed a Bill which will enable the Panama Canal Company to go into liquidation, if necessary, without being forced into bankruptcy. Beblin, January 14. At the opening of the Eeichstag to-day the Emperor William's speech was re» ceived with great enthusiasm. The Emperor referred in confident terms to the future. of the country, and said that the nourishing condi inn of industries, together with the eecmomical handling of the finances, would enable the Government to propose a remission of taxation. Eome, January 15. The Pope has presented gifts valued at £10,000 to many dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. The war vessels ordered to proceed to the Isthmus of Darien are being made ready for sea with the utmost despatch.
