Manchester Road Board

— W r This Day. Present — Messrs Bull (chairman), G"Wheeler, Reeve, and Lethbridge. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence from the following was j. ea( l : — w. Masters, Buimj tiiorpe, drawing -attention to state of Stoney Creek road ; E,. Cobb, Raukawa, asking permission to ■continue stab fence along road dividing seption 454 and 457 ; Public Works office, re. boundary road with Kiwitea Road District ;. H. C. Madsen, asking name of A. Bell to be put on rate roll for certain sections ; .Rangitikei County Clerk, informing the" Board that at last meeting of the Council it was resolved to erect a temporary approach to the Onepuhi Bridge ; W. Akers. (2), applying for repairs to road leading from Ashurst to Blo6k ; R. O. Clark, of Hobsonville, re pipes ; Clerk Borough Council, stating the €oiincil was •willing to pay one-third of Cemetery road. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Walter and William Bailey, Captain Campbell, Derby, Holland, and Masters waited •on the Board. Mr Reeve here took his seat. Eeport of the Engineer was read. For the deputation Mr Masters described the condition of the FeildingBunnythorpe, and Stoney. Creek roads. The formation was so bad they could not ■drive along that road. The chairman said the only thing to do was to metal it. Mr Masters thought if it was formed ■well it might answer, £15 would be well spent in the meantime. Mr Reeve said there was no question the, road should be made. hi reply to Mr Reeve, Mr Masters said he only wanted £ of a mile made. Mr Bull said the Manawatu Board had two-thirds of the money. The only way was for the people to raise anew loan, although they objected to pay more rates. In reply to Mr Wheeler, Mr Masters said the road could be made passable for the sum asked for. It would let them out for^M i winter. Mr/SYalter . Bailey said the time had gone past for a loan. Mr Bull saidthe Palmerston people had been wise in their generation in getting their roads made leading to them. Captain Campbell said it was not likely those people who were in the bush, would poll for a loan for new roads when they had got their roads made years ago. Mr Walter Bailey asked why the road could not be made out of general rates, to which Mr Bull replied their ward waß over £100 in debt. Mr W. Bailey asked why they should not spend their own money on their roads. After each member had. spoken it was Proposed by Mr Lethbridge, seconded by Mr Bull, That the Chairman and Engineer inspect the road from Oroua bridge to Stoney Creek, and call for tenders for work to make it passable. Tenders ; to be in by January -=-, JBB9-,vtd be considered at a special meeting held on that date. — Carried- • : The deputation thanked the Board and withdrew. [Left sitting.]
