At the wool auctions to-day- 12,000 bales are offered. Medium greasy was easy. The directors of the New Zealand Shipping Company report that an examination of the books of the Company shows that colonial balance-sheets have been inaccurate. The cost of ships and steamers has been overstated and the depreciation under-estimated by -284,000. The report recommends a gradual extinction of the deficit, in the hope of a prosperous future. In the report to the shareholders, the committee stated that the rules should be remodeled in order to permit the transfer of the entire management to London. A Fenian named Buckle gave evidence before fche Commission to-day. He deposed he had been ordered to shoot an expelled Land Leaguer named Roche, but the attempt failed, and the League gave him 50s to facilitate his flight to America. The committee of gentlemen who examined the figures supplied' by Mr W. L. Bees in support of his East Coast colonization scheme exonerate him- from the charge of misleading, and warmly support his proposals. Mr Bees is arranging s scheme by which at first 40,000 acres shall be devoted to the proposed colonists. December 14. During a discussion on the naval Estimates Lord Charles Beresford said that England's active fleet comprised only thirty battle ships, and if these were lost the Empire would probably be lost. Britain ought to spend twenty millions a year on the navy. It required at' once, to put it in a really formidable condition, seventyfour vessels of various classes, the united cost of which would be some twenty millions. The First Lord of the Admiralty said that the Government would next session submit proposals for increasing the effectiveness of the navy. Fakiß, November 13. United Ireland has published an article couched in outrageous language grossly insulting to the Commission. Sir James Harmon is indignant, and has ordered the arrest of the editor of that paper, William O'Brien, M.P. The Hon. G. C. Broderick, Warden of Merton College, Oxford, has been ordered to attend before the Commission for comparing Michael Davitt to the Whitechapel murderer- ... Belgbade, -December 14. Butterworth, of Ohio, has moved in the House of Representatives that the President be empowered to invite Canada and 1 England to negotiate for the admission of 1 the Dominion, or any province thereof, > into the United States. Paris, December 14. . Charles De Lesseps states the Panama loan is a failure, and that tbe money will * be returned to the investors. ' Constantinople, December 14. M. Nellidoff, the Russian Ambassador, demands thai the Porte shall give a precise date of. ihe payment of the war idemnity, insisting that he has stringent -^ orders to see that Russia is paid out of the new loan before any other payments are made. The Porte has agreed to rigorously comply with the demand. The press express an opinion that the proposal was negatived owing to the gross scandals afloat in reference to the matter and the corruption alleged to have been attempted to influence the votes of members. Opal and the French war vessel Fabert returned from a visit to the New Hebrides, where they punished the natives concerned in the massacre of a boat's crew of the Queensland labor vessel, Helena, in October last.
