There is a good deal of speculation in the produce markit, and buyers are purchasing shipments from New Zealand at high rates, Values, however, are depreciated bj every shower of rain. Large quantities of produce are purchased for the country markets, although much has been secured for local requirements. In Sydney parcels of New Zealand wheat are selling at from 5s 2d to 5s 6d. Water is fast disappearing in the back country. The creeks are still dry, and many of the cattle and sheep are still dying about Wilcannia. November. 5 Chaff is selling at Willcannia at £20 per ton and oats at 10s par bushel. Reports from farming centres in the Albury district indicate that the harvest will be better than expected under the circumtances. Melbourne, December 5, Government propose to increase the salary of Mr Speight, Chief Commissioner of Railways, to £4,000 per annum for the rest of his term, and re-engage him at £5000 per annum. A clerk in the Commercial Bank named Hewitt, and a stock jobber named Farrar, have been arrested for frauds on the Bank. The amount involved is £8000. Adklaide, December 5.
