A COMPLAINT. TO THE EDITOR OP THE STAR. Sic, — I am sure it ia needless for sic to reiterate the feeling of annoyance that prevailed amongst all genuine sportsmen when, in the early part of the shooting season ]ust closed, it became known the Government had been so ill advised as to proclaim an open season for the destrac- , tion of hares — from what source the " hare pest" emanated remains, 1 believe, an unsolved mystery. However, it is not with the action of the Government I wish to deal, but with a class of individuals who in no way represent the genuine sportsmen residing in this part of the district, from whom the Society receives little or no assistance, and for whose «spe :ial delectation* it would appear the Oovsrumont proclaimed an open season. Now, Sunday apparently being the most seasonable 3ay of the week, «tnd the rendezvous :W*thin measurable distance of the itejcougJi, may be seen a crowd of the sheeting- ; fraternity, accompanied with ail putts and conditions 01 dogs, aud as I have "watched 'the mon-' grel pack in portrait <eof .poor puss, ren tiered, from its exceptional condition at this lime of the- year,-uuable to fully avail itstih of its uuly means of escape, and heai- the plaintive scream whilst beiug dragged to all points of the compass, .seems feu me absolute cruelty. I think if there really exists auy real s ifferers from the depredation of hares, a more humane method could be adopted for their extermination than the present "unsportsmanlike system pursued. Not wishing to pose as a too highly sensitive individual., I would suggest, in conclusion, that the At'uhnutlisation Society assume the role also ot a Humane Society for the p:<;yention o? cruelty to animals. —l am, &c.
