At Eaiatea the natives are still in the hills, and threatens a stubborn resistance if attacked, being more than ever determined not to submit to the French, rule, in the island. They muster some three thousand, and are entrenched in several Btrong positions. When the Bichmond reached the Hervey Group it was found that the various islands had been formally annexed under a protectorate to Great Britain by H.M.S. Hyacinth*, Captain Burt, who had hoisted the British flag on aach island. The event was the cause of aiuoh rejoicing to the natives. / News by the a.s.
