MUNICIPAL EXPENDITURE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sift, — Will you kindly allow me to inform those gentlemen — His Worship the Mayor, the Engineer, and Councillor Lethbridge— who were positive in stating, at the last meeting of the Council, that " the maintenance man never received payment for a good deal of overtime given to his public duties," that if they will look up the accounts for last year they will find that he received the sum of £3 4s for one period of overtime, terminating the Ist day of April last. Other payments are not so plainly risible, but those who oujght to know believe this ■was one of several payments made in the same way. The argument that be holds the position of foreman is rather thin, seeing that the Engineer ! is paid for looking after him ; and, further, we must remember that all his tools are supplied by the Council. Now, I am not finding fault with Mr Green: I believe him to be a good man ; but why he should be treated so much better than other good men in a similar position is a mystery to his over-rated employers. If there is any sphere for " fair play and no favor" it should be in reference to the expenditure of public funds ; but, unfortunately, this is just the place where it is voted out. — I am, &c, Echo.
