LATE CABLES.

A largely attended meeting of colliery owners was held to-day, when a resolution was passed regretting that they were unable to grant an advance of wages to the miners ; and they also agreed that the Mayor of Sheffield, along with representatives chosen by the miners, could inspect their books to prove that they were not in a position to pay a higher rate of wage. Considerable alarm is felt in the Metropolis in consequence of the strike extending throughout the country. The stock of coal at present in London will probably last a fortnight, but, should the strike become general, much inconvenience and distress will be experienced.
Berlin, October 20. Several of the German doctors' -Mio attended the late Emperor, Frederick have published statements in tbe Berlin papers repelling seriatim the charges made by Sir Morell Mackenzie against Dr Bergmann's treatment of His Imperial Majesty.

George Syme, who shot dead his mother-in-law, Mrs Clifford, during a quarrel at Lilydale, has been ientenced to death. Tbis morning a goods train dashed into a milk train from Narrewaren. Macnamara, tbe driver of the goods train, jumped from the engine as he saw the impending catastrophe, but «tumb.ed and was cut to pieces by his own engine Considerable damage to rolling stock re» suited from the accident. Excellent turquoise deposits haye been discovered near .Kings river, Gippslaud. ChbißTchubch, This Day, A young man named Wdliam Home accidentally shot himself at Rakaia yesterday afternoon, and died in the evening. Auckland, This Day. The captain of the schooner Mailo (just arrived) reports the total loss of the barque Electra (loaded with copra), on a reef off Winaford Harbour. The captain and crew were rescued by the schooner.
