The Rotunda

On Saturday night the Feilding Brass Band played for tlie first time in the E.otunda. A large number of people, tempted out by the fineness of the night and the promised treat befoie them, turned out to assist by their presence, and the number of well dressed and happy looking folks walking about was a very pleasing picture. The Baud played really well, and proved how diligently they nad prepared the several pieces. We believe they purpose playing every Saturday evening, and occasionally on Sunday afternoons, when sacred pieces will be played. In this connection we may now devote a few lines to the originators, designers, and builders of the very handsome kiosk — or rotunda — which does so much to ornament Manchester Square. The Feilding Brass Band conceived the idea, and may be said to have carried it out from its inception. The necessary funds were raised by or among themselves. The design was drawn by Mr J. Valentine, and the building work was done by Messrs Valentine, O'Toole, Daniels, and Wilkinson ; the roofing and plumbing by Mr P. Thomson ; the turnery by Mr W. Chamberlain ; and the painting by Mr W. Beading, the whole being finished and completed in a neat and workmanlike manner. In conclusion we must remark that the Feildiug Brass Band deserves well of the Feilding* public, and some opportunity should be taken of giving the Band substantial support towards general expenses. The Band has ' hitherto been self-reliant and self-sup-porting, but that should not prevent the public showing a sense of their obligations by giving some return when the occasion arises.
