THE MARAROA IN A GALE.
LOSS OF TWO LIVES. DEATH OF A GOVERNOR. By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. [ per united rasas association. | Received October 9, 12.15 p.m, Sydney, This Day. The Mararoa, which left Auckland at 5 p.m. on October 3, arrived last night. On Sunday, while approaching the coast, she encountered a terrific gale with heavy sea. Yesterday, at htklf-past three in the afternoon, she was suddenly struck by an enormous wave of unusual magnitude, which broke on board with disastrous results. The passengers on the hurricane deck had no warning, and, being unable to escape, were hurled in all directions. Mrs Henderson and her infant child were carried overboard without any chance of help, and drowned. Two other passengers, Mr White and Mr Herbert, each had a leg broken, and a seaman named Jones had his leg fractured. Another child of Mrs Henderson's was fortunately caught by the rail, and hung suspended there until the vessel righted, when it was | rescued. Several other persons received severe bruises. i Bbisbane, This Day. Sir Anthony Musgrave, Governor of Queensland, was seized with pains in the abdomen, and died suddenly last night of synoope. He was 60 years of age, and had been Governor since March 1883. Received 0ct0ber 9, 1235 p.m. Constantinople, October 7. M. Nellidoff, Russian Ambassador, has made a demand that a portion of the million and a half loan, recently raised by Turkey, should be applied towards payment of the war indemnity. Adblaidk, This Day. Legal proceedings have been taken by the liquidators of the Commercial Bank for the recovery of moneys lost through the Directors' negligence.
