Football

(By "Off Side.") The return match between the Awaliuri club and the Feildiug 2nd fifteen was played on the Oval oa Saturday resulted in a win -for the latter by 1 point to nil. In the first spell, from a splendid pass of R. Parr's, J. EobinBon ran in and secured a try. The kick at goal, however, did not increase the score. No further score was made by either side. The winners had the best of the game throughout, play being seldom in their twenty-five. The tackling on both sides was really first-class. The principal feature of the game was the splendid passing of the Awahuri players, which was the best that has been witnessed on the ground this season, both forwards and backs played an unselfish game ; and I must say, although they are new beginners, that they are superior to the Feilding first fifteen in their passing. For the winners, Collins, Terry, Oorkery, Aitken (forwards) and Eobison and Watts (backs) were the pick, the tackling of the latter player being excellent. For the losers, H. Bennett, Driberg, Kewe (backs), and Sanson, Casey, Knight, and Moses, were the most" prominent. The latter player, who played barefooted and without a shirt, caused no end of amusement to the spectators by his clever runs, and it invariably took three or four of his opponents to bring him down. St. Patrick's College defeated the Epuni's in the final heat for the junior cup in Wellington on Saturday. Besides having an unbeaten record this reason, they have scored more points than any single club in New Zealand. The return match between the English and South Island teams was played on Saturday, when the Englishmen were again fictorious, this time by 6 points to nil. The Marton team beat Hunterville by 10 points to nil on Saturday. The Advocate described the match as a •closely contested one. The Englishmen play their final match in New Zealand against Wantoamqrrow. They leave Wellington for England in the Kaikoura •on Thursday. The football banquet which comes ■off on Friday evening promises to be -a great success. The secretary informs me that a large nnmber of tickets have ■already been disposed of. Members or the olub are particularly requested 4o be present. The .concluding match of the season be played on the Oval on Saturday next, between teams representing &>wn and country.
