The detectives believe Gasparini was on board the Wakatipu i when search was fruitlessly made. The French Consul- General has expressed indignation at the action of aMinister of a Crown in New Zealand, who, it is stated, frequently concerned himself in , Gasparini's behalf, in ref- ■ erence to raising subscriptions to defray the cost of applying for a : writ of | habeas corpus' for the release of : the prisoner in Sydney! An- official cpm- ' mtmication has been received by the> Consul-General stating that the Minister referred to conversed with Gas- , parini on the Wellington wharf, just prior to the steamer departing, and that he also gave messages to the de- > tective who was. in charge of . the prisoner. An Attache-Consulate states-: that he saw a man resembling Gas- ■ parini in the streets of Sydney after the arrival of the steamer, and called 1 the attention of Detective Walker to ; the circumstance, but he denied that ; the man was Gasparini.
