The peach trees about here are looking very well this season. A grand parade of horses v/ill be held at Palmerstou on Saturday. The lambing on the Manchester Block and Kiwitea, is exceptionally good this year. By telegram from Adelaide on Monday, Mr J. Walkley, of the Commercial Hotel, received news of the death of his father at the ripe age of 80. — Manawatu Times. A few pens of cattle were passed in but were disposed of after the sale. As showiug the great rise in the price of sheep lately it may be stated that a Rakaia. Canterbury, farmer Bold last week 6000 freezers at 17s 6d, in paddock, which he bought at the Aldington sale yards four mouths ago for Bs. Feilding is looking up. At a church social held recently, there were several specimens of " Gold," and a goodly number of "Diamonds." A case which should prove a warning to boys given to smoking is reported from Liverpool, New South Wales. At an inquest held on the body of Cornelius Devany, I«3£ years old, Dr Beattie stated that death was caused by nicotine poisoning. The boy played truant from school on Friday, and smoked a foul pipe and was chewing tobacco. He complained oi a violent headache on Saturday morning, and died at 10 o'clock on Saturday night. There was an unexpected steeplechase in Mr Pollock's establishment to-day. One dog was chasing another which ran through the dining room into the confectioners shop, and thence on to the show window, where it leaped about for a few brief seconds among the tarts and pies, and then dashed through a pane of glass into the street, followed by its baffled pursuer. The damage done can be made good with the price of putting in the glasa.
