The American Fisheries Dispute

President Cleveland has sent a message to Congress, in which, he says that the action of the Senate in the rejection of the Fisheries Treaty will compel them to pursue a policy of vigorous retaliation, which is calculated to inflict the utmost damage. He asks Congress to give him power to suspend th© privilege of the free transition of Canadian exports and imports which are carried across the United States territory. He advises that tolls be levied on all Canadian shipping using American lakes and canals. He expressed , a hope that the policy sketched therein would be calmly and firmly carried out. Mr J. G. Blaiue has issued a proclamation denouncing in strong terms the mes- j sage sent by President Cleveland to ; Congress. j Ottawa, August 25. ' A party of American fishermen at Lake Lobyne were attacked by some Canadian . fishermen, and in the course of the conflict an American woman was shot dead. London. August 24. The message sent by President Cleveland to the United States Congress has caused great sensation throughout Eng- j land, Canada, and America. It is feared ■ that grave results may follow.
