The Wanganui Rifles will commence shooting with a triangular team on September sth. At the parade of Napier Volunteers on Wednesday night Mrs Ormond presented an Indian mutiny medal and a New Zealand war medal to Charles Catten, and a New Zealand war medal to Thomas Boyd. Both belong to the 70th llegiment. The Defeuce Minister will be banquetted in Dunedin by the Volunteers when on his way to Melbourne. During his stay in Victoria he will gain all the information he can relative to the working of the defence system in that colony, so that he may be in a position to institute a comparison between the Victorian force and that of New Zealand. The Manchester Rifles were inspected by Col. Stapp last night. There were a few members absent without leave, who were duly fined. SergtMajor Macniillau instructed the men iv aiming and position drill. At the conclusion of the parade Col. Stapp complimented the recruits on the progress they were making. The next inspection parades will be on Friday, the 14th and 21st September.
