The Public Works Estimates
The Public Works Estimates were brought down ou Saturday. The amount required to be voted for actual expenditure this year is £862,807, as against £1, 1 28,077 voted and £966, 159 expended last year. Among the chief reductions in. salaries are the following : —Tinder-Secretary, from £800 to .£7OO ; assistant Under - Secretary, JE4OO to £375; Accountant, £425 to £400 ; Engineer-in-Chief, £1000 to £800 ; assistant Engineer-in-Chief, £900 to £750. The railway votes include £500 for Wellington-Foxton ; £65,000 for Marton-Auckland ; £50,---000 Woodville-Paimerston ; £24,000 Masterton-Woodville. .For roads in the Wellington Provincial District the following are set down :— NapierMurimotu, £lOQ0 ; Pahiatiia, Mangaone, arid adjacent blocks, £200 ; Eangitumau, Wangehu, Kopuaranga, £800 ; Mikimiki, , £350 ; ; Makakahi road, £200; Tirauinea bridge, £1700; Tuteekara road; £100; South Pahiatua, £200; Mangaone-Tiraumea, £110; South Mangaone road, £1000; Puketoi, £460 ; Makaki bridge to Mangahao, £250 ; Mauriceville West, £250 ; Pohangina-Omua, £140; Wanganui to Murimotu, £740 ; Marton to Murimotu, £100; Otamakapua, £400; Tokomaru Block, £100 ; Waitapu Block, £437 ; Maungakaretu, £463 ; Waimarino inland country, £250 ; Wairoa Survey District, £250 ; WaitotaraMomahaki, £300; Otaki to Foxton, £300; Miscellaneous, L2OO. Village Settlement roads (general), L 20,000. Jtioads — To give access to MartonAucklani line, L 19,000 ; roads in goidfields, L 35.000. For telegraph extension L 20,000 is set down. Under " public buildings" the following votes appear :— New Parliamentary Library (in brick), L 7 6; departmental buildings (Auckland), L 12,000 ; printing office (Wellington), L 7500 ; departmental and other buildings (Wellington) and additional water supply, L 1000; Wellington new prison (Mt. Cook), L 350 0; Wellington and Porirua Lunatic Asylums, LSOO ; f-unny-side (Chnstchurch), L 4100; Seacliff (Dunedin), L 3500 ; Hospitals, &c, L 2044. For harbor defences L 56.541 is set down ; for lighthouses, &c, L 875 0; for rates on Native lands (for pact year), Ll 1,500; for charges and expenses of loan, 1j30,000 ; for Native land «*i*bases, L 5571 ; permanent vft y affd, rolling stock, L50,0Q0.
