Death of Mr H. S. Palmerson
c We (Manawatu Times) have thY a melancholy duty of recording .ibi^sacl;' ending of a useful life. On Saturday; night, at about H> o'clock, Mr H. S^ c Palmerson, who bad not'been in good ° health for some time past, in a monient of weakness, attempted suicide by cutting his throat. Medical aid was at once summoned, but the efforts ° of Dr Maciatyre and Dr Porter were> t unavailing to save the life of their . patient, who, however, lingered on >, until 10 o'clock on Sunday mornings • when he expired. The* news of this sad event cast quite a gloom over they c community, by whom deceased waa 1 universally esteemed and respected. 1 hie will be missed "by many, and sui- • ( ] cerely mourned by his acquaintances, - j who will also sympathise with hi<* V relatives in their affliction. Deceased s leaves a widow and three children, the eldest about 13 years of age, and the youngest an infant la arm* ;Na ; cause can be assigned for the rash qcti' and those who knew the. hearty and', cheerful character of deceased wereV" astounded when they, heard . of 'the • » event. There can Wno doubt thatvl the act was committed in a moment-of'*-temporary insanity: Deceased tytpt' • . one who made 'many friends; and^no^ : I enemies, his genial disposition endear- 1 i ing him to all. In the early days of l settlement in Palmerston he took ;an'' active part in public life and local • politics. He was, we believe, a mem- < her of the original Town Board and ; • subsequently of the Borough Council, 1--and at the time of his death he was 'a~ member of the Horowhenua County ■ Council. He was also one of th»; 1 founders of the Manavratu Kilwinnitig^Lodge, in which he held the office of - 1 Treasurer for some time. . "• f. An inquest was held yesterday, and • | after hearing the evidence, the juiy, without retiring, returned a verdict of . suicide while temporarily insane; : ' ;^^ , The funeral took' place to-day, arid- -= . was largely attended. : '- ■- ■-^ ■
