FAREWELL TO FEILDING.

TO THE KDITOK. OF THE STAR. ir,— A certain barrister, engaged in court ou a hopeless case, received I'roin his solicitor the pithy instruction, " No case— abuse plaintiff's attorney" —which he did. Even so "Samuel Goodbehere" hath, in his wrath, charged Ishmael with falsehood ; but let him be excused, -the Hebrew poet before him said in his haste, "All men ure liars." And, in spite of this strong lauguage, Ishmael still holdeth (and will ever hold) that the two songs that caused this wordy war were vulgar, and therefore, from a critical noint of view, though not from a moral one, of doubtful character. " Samuel Goodbehere" hath misquoted Ishmael, but, as the latter is not a statute, let that pass. The misquoted passage is an ordinary satirical metaphor : if " Samuel Goodbehere " cannot understand satire or metaphor, how difficult j he will find his Dickens, his Shakespeare, his Milton, his Bible ! But let Feilding take comfort, — she is losing her thoru-in-the-flesh. Ishmael, in farewelling Feilding, repenteth him that he hath used English too " highflown" (i.e. elegant) for certain people; and, having been " scarified" (a pretty word), hedeparteth, shaking off the <lust of his feet in testimony against his foes, but not quoting the old saying concerning pearls and swine, — for "this his politeness forbiddeth. Should he ever again, in his wanderings, visit the pool he hath troubled, he will be wiser, and, hearing a vulgar song, will applaud it to the echo, lest he offend (not one of these little ones, but) " Samuel Goodbehere." — I am, &c., Ishmael. Feilding, July 28, 1888.
