CANTERBURY CATTLE MARKETS.

|_P*3B UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchubch, July 25. There was a fair attendance at Addington yards to-day with fair weather in the morning, but slightly overcast with threatening sky in the afternoon. There was ouly an ordinary entry of fat cattle, and nothing extra at that while the demand was not spirited. A line of neat little Devon heifers sold by C. Newton brought from £5 10s to £6 12s 6d, and for these there was fair competition; but all round the beef market was sluggish and demand spiritless, and beef prime per lOOlbs about 188 6d for very best, down to 15s ordinary, and even less than that for poorer sorts. Store Cattle. — There was about the usual entry of store cattle for which a j fair demand was manifested. Yearli ings brought up to £l, 16 months to 2 year olds brought from £1 10s to £2. The rest of the market were odd lots, with nothing calling for special notice. Dairy Cattle — There was not a great many in, and very few good cows. As high as L 8 5s was obtained for good animals in immediate profit, but cows a good bit off calving were slow of sale, and ordinary sorts were a drug in the market. Fat Sheep — There was a good entry of sheep all round. The main bulk, however, comprised fat sheep, many of which were very superior. As high as 245, 23s 6d, 18s 6d and 17s 6d was obtained for prime crossbred wethers. These were exceptional prices, and a line of superb merinos from Leonard White's Waikari farm brought up to a well-deserved 255. Crossbred wethers take them at the average, were worth about 14s 6d or 15s, and mutton 2£d up to 2£d per lb. Ewes were iv proportion, worth less and merino-cross wethers were a trifle better on the average.
