Classics in the House
The dreariness of the "stonewall* of the Otago Central Bill last nigbfc was enlivened by an incident which; happened so neatly as to suggest that. it was not altogether accidental. Mr Hutchison who has a weakness for Latin quotations, ferociously hurled a long one at the Bill. Thereupon Mr W. P. Reeves rose and gravely asked whether the hon member was in order in making such statements in a foreign tongue— statements conveying imputations he would not dare to make in his own language. MrHutchison protested that he was saying nothing wrong, and Mr Reevea suggested that the words be taken down. Mr Macarthur said that for his part he was not familiar with Latin, but he would suggest that the* matter be referred to the Minister of Education as the highest authorily. Mr Reeves said he was perfectly willing to submit to the judgment of such a high authority. The Minister of Education maintained an attitude of stern indifference, and Mr Hutchison was fain to proceed on his way rejoicing, no one apparently being disposed to undertake an explanation. — N.Z.
