A circular has been received from the Defence office cancelling circular No. 4 dated Bth May, 1886, referring to the four deep attack formation. An alarm was given in Dunedin on Saturday night to test the alacrity with which the Volunteers would turn out in a case of surprise. Owing to many being engaged at business and otherwise, the muster was not so large as was expected. The Navals, Artillery, and Hussars showed up well, however, and the B. Battery and Navals had guns at the Ocean Beach in fightißg trim very smartly. By a return presented to the Legislative Council, it is shown that the Government intend to maintain a total force for httrbor defence of 200 men, of whom 146 will be artillery (including 6 officers), and 54 torpedo men (including two officers)..
