Volunteer Items
A Wellington Volunteer shot himself through the body when carelessly handling his loaded rifle. He was near iiis own house at the time, and there was no excuse for the charge being in the rifle. He is now in the Hospital and his recovery is doubtful. An Austrian chemist claims to have invented a fluid rf most destructive properties. This fluid, when brought into contact with the air, after the explosion of a shell in which it had been contained, is transformed into a gas, which, being heavier than the air, descends to the ground, killing all men and animals within its ivaeh. At the Wimbledon meeting, the Queen's prize was won by Private Fulton, of the Queen's Westminsters, with a score of 208 points, being eight more than the winning number of last year. The Manchester Rifles had a very good muster last night, only four men being unaccounted for. The usual j fines were inflicted in each case. The corps was instructed in company drill by Sergt.-Major Macmillan. The progress being made by the recruits is very creditable.
