Janus
We have been amusingly reminded of Mr Pickwick's philosophy who, when asked what he should do if there were two m"bs, replied he would shout with the biggest one. The Rangitikei Advocate, ia its issue of July 17th, argues that as Freetraders are too weak to stand alone, the best thing is for them to assist in carrying the measures to which they are opposed, and then at the next election, face about, and fight on the opposite side. This is truly Gladstonian, and therefore clever, but alßo such a delicious piece of inconsistency, as to call for remark and necessitate a smile. The following are tho passages referred to:— " The Freetraders must be well aware that they are numerically far too weak to form a Government that would have a shadow of a chance of doing anything towards repealing the tariff. — This being so, the best thing for them to do would certainly be to assist the Ministry to carry their policy measures through without unnecessary delay, and bide their time till next general election to fight out the battle of Freetrade v. Protection."
