The Feilding Jockey Club
The ''local Jockey Club" should feel highly complimented by the following paragraph which appeared in the Marton paper yesterday : — " An individual, whose residence is situated not far from the principal town in the Manchester Block, was, he considers rather "had" by the local Jockey Club. It appears that before the last meeting, the secretary presented to him a ticket for membership, and not being a member of the club, he considered naturally that it was a complimentary one, and was very profuse in his acknowledgments for what he considered a piece of generosity on the part of the club. He duly appeared at the races, and was fortunate enough to back the winning horses in several events, and went home with some fat dividends in his pocket. A few days afterwards, meeting the secretary, his heart was warmed towards him, and he " shouted" several times, but shortly afterwards he was requested to pay up for his ticket, which sobered his joy and made him pull a very long face, particularly as by this time all the winnings were gone ; but not to be outdone he went home and wrote a cheque, payable to " swindle," which somewhat relieved his feelings, but he has vowed a vow to beware of jockey clubs in future."
