Melboetbne, This Day. \ The death sentence passed on Charles Markhaui for shooting at his wife has been commuted to fifteen years penal servitude. Work is progressing rapidly at the Exhibitiou. The Germau Court will be ready in time for the opening. The New Zealand Court is next in order of advancod preparation, and promises to be one of the most interesting Courts of the Exhibition. Sir James Hector and his assistants are showing great activity in their work. The English and American Courts are very backward . Adelaide, July 16. The football match to dny between the Norwood and English teams was won by the former by five goals to three. Sydney, July 16. J Extensive frauds have been discovered in the Government tramway service. Ten guards are said to be implicated. It is supposed they manipulated the indicators and resold tickets previously issued, by these means defrauding the Govern* ment to the extent of £100 a week. The matter is being investigated. Hob art, July 16. In the Assembly toe attempt to tax money belonging to Tasmanians, but de* posited outside the colony, was rejected. Brisbane, July 16. The steamer Ranelagh ran down and sank the brigantine Spunkie, 132 tons, Captain Wai sch, off Cape Moreton. No lives were lost, the brignntine's crew being rescued by the steamer. The latter was not damaged bj the collision. News has been received from New Guinea to the effect that two men belonging to an exploring party have been murdered by the Natives. Count P. Feill and Kerr Roeholl, who were engaged in explorations in New Guinea, were deserted by their followers, who carried off their instruments and provision". The leaders of the party lived on copra for some time and were not rescued until they had gone through great hardship.
