REPORT OF SYDNEY MARKETS.

The N.Z.L. and M.A. Company (limited) report under date Sydney, June 28 : — Butter (duty Id per lb). — Since last writing large, supplies have reached this market, both from our coastal districts as well as from other colonies, and prices hare suffered to some extent in consequence. The bulk of the consignments, however, consists of butter that has been packed for some little time, which was evidently been kept back by the farmers in anticipation of a better market, and it is for this description that prices are scarcely so firm. Nominally best local coast butter i& worth up to Is lOd, but within the last week sales hare been effected at Is 6d to Is 7d, and this is really the present actual value of the best local article, first quality New Zealand newly packed bringing from Is to Is 4d, second descriptions being worth from 9d to Is, and pastry 6d upwards. Should supplies not be excessive within th« next fortnight, we do not anticipate any weakening in prices, though an improvement can hardly be expected considering the stocks now held in this market. Wool (free), — The business passing in the local market during the past week has been of an unimportant character, being confined to a few private sales of small lots held over from last week's auctions. The third series of public auction sales of wool for the current year commenced in London on the 19th inst. As anticipated in our recent issues, great spirit characterised the biddings for all merino descriptions, and we now in receipt of the satisfactory intelligence, from our Head Office, that competition is increasing as the sales progress, and prices have advanced £d per lb on fine haired wools Orossbreds are selling at late rates, with the exception of the very coarse varieties, the demand for which appears to be somewhat slackened. From this it will be seen that the prospects for the future are looking brighter than for some time past, and should trade in the great English and Continental manufacturing centres remain undisturbed by any adverse change in the aspect of political affairs in Europe, prices for the staple may, ere long, exhibit still greater firmness.
