(PEB UNITED PRKSS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, July 13. A young man named Thomas Crosea hanged himself at his house at Waitoa, Te Aroha, the body being found yesterday afternoon. The cause is unknown. Deceased, who was a single man, was not in want of money. Cury and Gasparini, the Frenoh escapees, have been spirited away and taken, it is believed, to Wellington under secret instructions. Cury was arrested, while Gasparini was taken out of the lock-up by the detectives without the knowledge of the lock-up keeper. The police refuse to give information on what authority the prisoners were removed. Donedin, July 12. The weather is clearing. No damage is reported in the neighborhood of town, but train communication is still interrupted. Hokittka, July 12. A man named (Jlaud Bolmer was drowned in the Mikonui River, south of Ross. The body is not yet recovered. Bichard Porter, a well-known publican, was founded dead in bed from heart disease. Chbistchubch, July 13. The German Consul, Mr W. H. Sims, has forwarded to the Dowager Empress Victoria of Germany an address of condolence from the German women in Cbristchurch. Hoorell and Meredith decline to con* test the Ashley seat. J. M. Verrall, of Ohoka, who was defeated by Mr Pearson at last election, announces himself as a candidate. Jn banco this afternoon, Mr Justice Ward quashed the conviction of William Paul, convicted in the resident Magis* trate's Court at Timarn, for having a distillation apparatus m his position. The grounds of quashing were that the conviction did not show that Paul intended to use the apparatus for the purposes of distillation, and did, state where the magistrate heard the case, when the offence was committed, or where the conviction was made.
