LATE CABLES.
I — ♦ , By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. (PJEH T7KITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.) Sydney, This Day. The question of the ownership of the ■ Murray river is again in dispute between Victoria and New South Wales. The former colony claims jurisdiction over the whole of the river. The dispute is again raised by the action of New South Wales in proclaiming the river closed for net fishing for twelve months, i Melbourne, July 2. : A barmaid named Honora Campbell died here under yesterday suspicious circumstances, and at the mqueat to-day the medical testimony proved that an illegal operation had been performed on the woman. The jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown. This Day. During the year ending May 31, 270 companies, with the nominal capital of I £52,000.000, were registered in this ; colony. I Lord Knutsford, replying to the re--1 quest made by the Postal Conference held ,in January last, that the Admiralty j should survey a route for the Pacific j cable, says that H..M.S. Egena, which is i now on a general surveying tour, would furnish information concoramg' the deep sea soundings for a general line of cable, but it would entail a long and searching examination to survey a route to any purpose. Lord Knutsford adds that no alteration can now be made. The question of hastening the work of survey must remain open till Lord Knutsford ie satisfied there is a prospect of the necessary, funds being forthcoming and more expedition is important to the Imperial interests. The annual cost of the Egerm is £12,000. and if another vessel is provided to complete the survey the expense will probably be increased to about £30,000 irrespective of the value of the ship and the expenditure on the outfit.
