The claim made by Te Kooti against the colony for compensation for the destruction of his house and goods by fire, is not quite so ndiculous as some prejudiced persons would make out. seeing that it is not without precedent as the following will show. The warrant had been in force since February 1887. Ministers have fully redeemed their promise to taper off the public works expenditure. When they took office last October the liabilities of the public works fund amounted to £850,401. At the end of last March they stood at £471,695, showing a decrease of nearly half a million in six months. The public will be pleased to learn that S. J. Thompson, of the Bed House, has just opened up 20 cases of winter drapery (latest fashions), comprising dress materials, trimmings, hosiery, laces, gloves, men's clothing, Crimean and woollen shirtings, etc. For cash the prices are lowest in town. — Advt. The next sale of the Wellington and Manawatu Bailway Company's lands to be held on Friday the 29th instant, is attracting a very large amount of attention from buyers in all parts of the colony. Messrs T. Kennedy Macdonald and Co., the well known auctioneers, have numerous applications for plans and details of the land, which has been visited by several hundreds of people since the sale was announced. The easy terms, the well known quality of the soil, and its proximity to Wellington all combine to make it specially valuable. Lithographic plans may be had on application at the office of this paper or from the auctioneers, Messre T. Kennedy Macdonald and Co., Wellington. The N Z. Surely this will bring those tardy bachelors to a sense of their iniquity, and induce them to mend their ways. Mr James Henderson of Kihikihi informs the Auckland Weekly News that he was a Canadian, that thirty two years ago the codlin moth made its appearance and though the people were afraid yot they found it did good as well as harm as, instead of most apple trees bearing a heavy crop each alternate year, it thinned the crop and equalised the bearing eveey year. That the fruit left was much better in size and quality and it never prevented there being plenty.
